Plot[]
The movie begins with our main character, Cecilia Kass, escaping the home of her boyfriend, Adrian Griffin. She is picked up by her sister, Emily, Adrian attempts to grab ahold of Cecilia, but they manage to escape.
2 weeks later, she is living with a childhood friend, James Lanier. She grabs the mail, only to run back into the house after seeing a jogger (This is due to her PTSD)
Emily arrives at the house, and they discussed what Adrian did to Cecilia before her escape seen in the cold open. Cecilia and Emily head over to Adrian’s company headquarters, where Ceciliais given $5,000,000 on the condition that she won’t break any crimes. That night, Cecilia provides a brand new ladder for James and his daughter Sydney, and she also provides Sydney 10,000$ every month to let her go to fashion school, though, down the hallway, we see a shot that show them at a distance, signifying that The Invisible Man has arrived.
While sleeping, Adrian pulls the blanket off of Cecilia and Sydney. Cecilia goes to retrieve it, only for it to not budge, and a knee print shows that Adrian is there. Cecilia screams for James, but he warns her that Adrian will continue to invade her mind if she lets him, and that she has a job interview the following day.
At the interview, she opens her portfolio, only to reveal that her drawings are missing, a few seconds later, she passes out. That night, as she’s sleeping, Adrian takes photos of her. The following day, she visits Emily, who appears angry, after a brief conversation about a mysterious email, she slams the door in her face. Later, after taking a shower, she gets a call from the hospital saying that when she passed out, she was dosed with a high level of Diazepam (Which she drugged Adrian with) and that she is still pregnant, after she thought she was taking birth control pills.
That night, she sees the email in her sent box, and begins to cry on the floor. Sydney comes to comfort her, only to be smacked by Adrian. Sydney thinks Cecilia punched her and calls her father, the pair leave the house, leaving Cecilia alone.
In the middle of the night, she pours coffee on the floor, in an attempt to see his footprints. She talks to him, asking “Why me?” “I was just a suburban girl who happened to stumble into your life one night.” After this conversation, she calls his phone, and hears the vibration in the attic. She walks into the attic, seeing his phone with a text message, reading ”SURPRISE.” She turns around and grabs a knife sealed in a bag. She is reluctant to climb back down, and pours paint, revealing Adrian, he falls, and she walks into the kitchen, with the paint all over the sink, and the water on.
He grabs her, and they have a fight in the kitchen. Cecilia, getting the upper hand, runs outside to call a cab. She goes to Adrian’s house, seeing their dog, Zeus, whose shock collar was removed by her in the opening scene. She finds his laboratory, entering the code “121417,” The day they met. After finding the suit, and taking it, she hides it in their closet, only to be attacked by Adrian. She runs for it, and makes it back to the cab, where she calls Emily to meet her at a restaurant.
At the restaurant, they reconcile, where she tells Emily about the suit, and pulls out the knife. The knife is floating behind Cecilia, and it flies over to Emily, slashing her throat. Cecilia is blamed for her sister’s death and is taken to a mental facility.
Later, James visits her and tells him that she didn’t do it, he later leaves. Tom also later comes, bringing a bag, and a pen, she tells him “I used to feel bad for you, but now, I see you for who you really are, you’re just the jellyfish version of him, everything but... the spine.” She pushes his files onto the floor, and grabs his pen.
After he leaves, she takes the pen, and tries to kill herself in front of Adrian, remarking that he won’t get the baby. He attacks her, she does the same with the pen. An officer checks on her, only to have his taser turned on him. She makes a break for it, with cops trying to apprehend her. Adrian both knocks out, and kills (some) them. After breaking free, she finds him, and he says he’ll hurt someone she loves, and she chases after him in a car.
She calls James, explaining that Adrian will do something bad to Sydney. They both make it there, though James get there first, beforehand, Sydney sprayed mace at him, and missed, she made it out, and was knocked to the floor. She sits and watches, unable to do anything, as James is beaten by The Invisible Man, Cecilia makes it, spraying a fire extinguisher at The Invisible Man, and shoot him. She takes his mask of... revealing, Tom. They are all shocked.
Adrian is found by the police, who rescue him. Cecilia tells James that if he could fake his death, he could also fake his kidnapping. Adrian calls Cecilia, asking if she would like to have dinner with him. She accepts, and considers bringing him back into his life.
At dinner, (being listened to by James) they discuss how their relationship will work. She asks him about the suit, which he declines every single question about. Cecilia begins to break down, knowing that he could never be honest with her. He says “It shouldn’t come off as a SURPRISE.” She excuses herself, and dons the suit. She slits his throat, pretending to be distressed and saddened. She mocks him as he bleeds out. She exits, and James asks her what happened, she tells him he killed himself, though he sees the suit, he believes her story.
She walks out, closes her eyes, and breathes in the air.

During an interview with Cinemablend's ReelBlend Podcast on February 22,2020 Director Leigh Whannell stated that the movie is not part of the dark universe as stated "It was weird, this film came about in a really random way. It wasn’t like I was plugged into some kind of worldbuilding. I had just finished Upgrade, they called me in for a meeting with some of these Universal and Blumhouse execs… I go to this meeting, and they didn’t really talk about Upgrade. I mean, they said they liked it and they moved on. So, I’m sitting on this couch thinking 'What am I here for? What is this meeting about?' And they started talking about The Invisible Man''.[12]
